Abstract

Summary A brief review is given of the past conflict of opinion concerning the role of the epiglottis during swallowing. There is no longer any ground for such conflict: it is known that man can swallow comfortably after removal of the epiglottis, provided that the neuromusccular mechanism of the remainder of the larynx is intact, and it has been shown previously that the epiglottis in many persons does turn over and cover the top of the larynx. This fact is further illustrated in this short paper, since the previously published demonstrations have not received sufficient recognition.
