Abstract

Abstract The interaction of a series of n-alkanols with dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayers was studied using time-resolved X-ray diffraction techniques and scanning calorimetry. The length of the alkanol chain was found to influence the d-spacings for the L β′ and L α phases for fully hydrated DMPC bilayers. The effect of n-alkanol on the kinetics of the L β′ to L α phase transformation was found to be a function of both the length of the alkanol chain and the size of the domain structures found laterally within a bilayer. In addition, the time required to induce the L β′ to L α phase transition as a function of a temperature jump was found to correlate with the degree of cooperativity in the transition.
