Abstract

Abstract We have measured the effects of the substrate on the optical absorbance of heated thin silver films deposited on quartz and on silicon. For quartz, we have measured the effects of the shape on the optical absorbance of silver particles. The absorbance of these films was measured over the spectral range 300 to 700 nm for both s- and p-polarizations of the light and at various angles of incidence. The experimental data are compared with calculated values of the absorbance of light by oblate spheroidal particles.
