Abstract

Abstract A kinetic study was made of the mechanism of chain propagation in spontaneous alternating copolymerization of styrene with methyl-α-chloracrylate in the presence of a complex-forming agent—diethylaluminium chloride in dichlorethane solutions. From the analysis of concentration dependences of the rate of copolymerization on the composition of monomer mixtures with different overall concentrations of comonomers it was established that the propagation reaction is effected both by the addition of individual comonomers and their donor-acceptor complexes. Several kinetic and statistical parameters of chain propagation were calculated in the system studied. These were compared with results of kinetic investigation into the mechanism of chain propagation in alternating copolymerization of styrene with methylmethacrylate in the presence of diethylaluminium chloride.
