Abstract

Abstract X-ray fluorescence induced by proton bombardment in vacuum and in a helium atmosphere is used to study the elemental composition of pottery from different centuries. Comparisons of glazing and clay compositions of these specimens are made: except for lead concentrations, no significant differences are observed. Transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy is used in order to try to determine oxidation states of iron in different samples. Conclusion about the furnace atmosphere conditions during the firing of these specimens are drawn.
