Abstract

Abstract A conventional laboratory-produced immunofluorescent assay for IgM antibodies to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was compared with two commercially available kits, one based on immunofluorescence and one on immunoperoxidase staining. The latter also incorporated a step in which IgG antibodies were precipitated. The sensitivity of all assays was similar, but the method based on immunoperoxidase staining had increased specificity due mainly to the greater discrimination between true and false positives in sera containing rheumatoid factor.
