Abstract

Abstract Calculations are presented of the separation distribution for adjacent terrace edges on a vicinal surface. It is demonstrated that at high temperature the distribution is peaked at zero separation, and as the temperature is lowered the most probable separation between edges shifts toward the mean value. We also calculate the correlation function for two different edges separated by r intermediate terraces. Reference is made with computer simulation and with STM data from Si(001).
