Abstract

Abstract A case of paroxysmal auricular tachycardia is presented which in a matter of hours led to acute congestive heart failure and terminated fatally. The case is of interest (1) because the patient had been tested rigorously medically and physiologically for work tolerance before the episode and was believed to be normal and (2) because the presence of the marked mitral stenosis could not be demonstrated before death. The diagnosis depended on the clinical aphorism, “paroxysmal auricular tachycardia leads early to heart failure only in the previously diseased heart.”
