Abstract

ABSTRACTExplorations in Heterogeneity: Crossed mirrors. This article deals with linguistic and cultural contacts in Africa (and elsewhere) and their effects on language change and language structure.   This cognitive approach focuses on how "semanta" is related to linguistic habits and ritualization.   Two quite contrasting cases: French in Africa and "marginal" (nonstandard) French in France are used to examine the "marginal functions" of language, the problem of "registers of discours" and the multilayering of discourses. The relationship between semantax (the mainly subconscious development of linguistic forms) and layering (the mainly conscious, symbolic and categorizing functions in the sociolinguistic sense) are examined.
