Abstract

•We develop a sparse coding algorithm to extract key information from noisy speech.•We evaluate the new algorithm through normal hearing and hearing impaired subjects.•The new algorithm is comparable with a state-of-the-art Wiener filtering algorithm.•Improvement is less in fluctuating noise than in stationary noise.•The intelligibility gain depends on input SNR rather than the hearing loss level.
