Abstract

As it passes through its life-cycle and different hosts, Toxoplasma gondii must sense and respond to changes in its environment. T. gondii life cycle transitions and cell cycle changes are accompanied by major changes in gene expression and the parasite transcriptome. While many of the components of the general transcription machinery are conserved, few classic transcription factors were identified until the ApiAP2 APETELA plant-like transcription family was discovered. Gene expression, including bradyzoite differentiation, is also controlled by epigenetic factors. This chapter reviews current efforts to understand the role of ApiAP2 in transcriptional regulation and the importance of epigenetic factors and post-transcriptional mechanisms of gene regulation in Toxoplasma.
