Environmental education starts where science education stops: Let's look at our water

Abstract

This paper - based on a conference workshop for early childhood practitioners - illustrates the serious issues facing Australians with regard to water overuse. It proposes that science education is an imperfect vehicle for helping students become wiser and more active water conservationists. Environmental education - with its focus on social critique and action-oriented learning - offers a more likely framework for creating social change that reduces water consumption and protects water supplies and, also, 'makes a difference' with regard to living sustainably.
