Abstract

Individual trabeculae of human femoral heads were tested cyclically in tensile mode. Tensile modulus was determined in each loading and unloading cycle and significantly larger in the unloading phase. Determination of material properties with a rheological model revealed no significant difference between control and osteoporotic trabeculae. In contrast, bone morphometry was significantly deteriorated in osteoporosis and with increased ageing.
