Storage-outflow modelling of streamflow recessions, with application to a shallow-soil forested catchment

Abstract

Abstract The objectives of this study were to introduce an alternative to the matching strip, correlation and parameter-averaging methods for deriving master recession characteristics from a set of recession segments, and to apply the method to streamflow recession segments for a small forested catchment in which baseflow is provided by drainage of the saturated zone in the shallow permeable soil. The method involves fitting conceptual storage-outflow models using an iterative algorithm. Diagnostic plots revealed that the recessions were non-linear and that the recessions did not follow a common single-valued storage-outflow relation. A model involving two linear reservoirs provided substantially better fit than three single-reservoir models, indicating that the form of the recession curve probably depends not just on the volume of subsurface storage, but also on its initial distribution amongst reservoirs.
