Abstract Logistics planning and optimization are key activities for the competitiveness of companies. An important area which can benefit from the new optimization techniques is undoubtedly natural gas transmission networks. The problem of gas network optimization deals with the question of how to operate the network, that is, taking decisions on quantity and quality of natural gas flow, minimizing at the same time the energy consumption of transport and such that, all demands of the gas network are satisfied (Martin et al., 2006). In this paper we use an sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm implemented in SNOPT library for solving the optimization problem, whose objective is to minimize fuel gas consumption of the compressors whereas demands of consumers have to be satisfied.
