Abstract

Abstract DNA affinity chromatography with native DNA-cellulose and denatured DNA-Sepharose followed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to identify phage T1-coded proteins which bind to DNA. Nine proteins were found to bind strongly to calf thymus DNA, all of which belonged to the Class I (early) or Class II (early-late) categories of T1-specified gene products. The products of T1 genes 1 and 2, which are essential for T1 DNA synthesis, and of genes 3.5 and 4 which function in DNA replication and recombination, all bound strongly to DNA. None of the T1 structural proteins were identified as having DNA-binding affinity.
