There is a constant need for the fire and rescue service to develop new methods, materials and extinguishing media to implement the most effective firefighting operations as possible while minimizing environmental impacts. The effect of additives in the extinguishing water is fairly unknown. In this report small-scale experiments shows that additives and fire retardants can provide a significant improvement in extinguishing effect on fire with class A fuel. A total of nine additives in water were tested. The extinguishing media was applied to a bonfire of pine studs. The effect was measured as the time it took for the media to reduce the temperature just above the fire to 200 degrees Celsius and a visual observation regarding when no flames was visible. Depending on which part of the extinguishing process that is studied various products show different effect. Some of the additives gave a good effect in the gas phase of the fire and some were better at surface cooling. The products that show the overall best results have a good effect throughout the whole process. It is clear that this area of research can develop the efficiency of extinguishing operations but more work has to be done. As an example a method to evaluate the environmental impact should be developed.
