Abstract

Abstract The motion of a nonlinear oscillator system governed by hamiltonians of the form H = H 0+ λV, where H 0 represents an integrable part of the system and λ V is treated as a small pertubation, is known to change abruptly from a conditionally periodic to a stochastic motion as λ V becomes sufficiently large relative to H 0. This paper presents a theory based on Zwanzig's projection-operator method to predict the onset of this transition; that is a method of determining the critical value of the energy E 0 with fixed λ where the transition occurs.
