Observation of a first order transition in the ferrimagnetic spinel MnV2O4

Abstract

Abstract Neutron diffraction experiments show that the spinel MnV 2O 4 is tetragonal up to T ★ = 53 K with a triangular magnetic moments configuration. In the temperature range T ★ < T < T c (T c = 56K), MnV 2O 4 displays a Néel configuration and reduced magnetic moments lengths. These results together with magnetization measurements performed up to H = 11 T indicate that a first order transition is taking place at T ★. This transition between two ferrimagnetic configurations is discussed in terms of spin-orbit coupling.
