Abstract The geomorphology and sedimentation of Poole Harbour are poorly described although there are many localized studies within the harbour. Water level changes, both within the archaeological time-scale and at the present, may be a result not only of eustatic and regional isostatic changes but also of the effects of changes in tidal prism. Variations in marsh, intertidal areas and beaches have had important effects on the ecology of the harbour. Further investigation is needed of the landforms underlying both Sandbanks and the Studland dunes, as well as the responses of the intertidal areas and shore to changes in water levels.
