Abstract

Abstract Previously derived theories of diatomic dissociation rates in the low pressure limit are extended to account more realistically for the collision frequency and for vibrational quantum effects. The resulting theories are compared with experimental data for Br 2, I 2, Cl 2, F 2, O 2, N 2, and H 2 in an argon medium. Despite great simplicity and neglect of certain energy transfer inefficiencies, the best of the four theories (EJ-ISCA) achieved semiquantitative accuracy.
