Abstract

Abstract The effect of saturated and unsaturated substituents at the 5-position on the fluorescence properties of several disubstituted barbiturates is examined. The natural lifetimes of the oxybarbiturates' excited states are influenced by the electronic environment provided by the unsaturated substituents, possibly through a resonance interaction between the triplet state of the unsaturated substituents and the ring chromophore singlet state. The natural lifetimes are not constant over the compound series although the spectral properties remain the same.
