Abstract

Summary An instance is reported of a recovery from purulent pericarditis in an 80month-old infant following a single large, therapeutic aspiration of the pericardial sac and the subsequent, gradual development of pneumopericardium, both of which factors appear to have operated together in bringing about the favorable outcome. The suggestion is derived from the events in this case that therapeutic aspiration followed by induced pneumopericardium may, under certain circumstances, serve as a conservative method of treatment in purulent pericarditis.
