Abstract

Abstract The frequency dependence of dislocation damping in niobium was measured in the megahertz frequency range at 293 and at 80°K. The results are interpreted in terms of an ‘elastic string’ dislocation mechanism and in terms of a dislocation motion mechanism based on the movement of kinks. Both models appear to be consistent with the experimental results. The ‘elastic string’ mechanism leads to a viscous damping constant of 1.1 × 10 −4 dyn sec. cm −2 at 293°K. The kink motion mechanism leads to a ratio of the kink density/kink damping constant of 0.3 × 10 19 cm dyn −1 sec. −1
