Abstract

Abstract A short review is given of physical processes which limit high voltage insulation in vacuum. Prebreakdown field emission, ignition events, current flow during full breakdown and conditioning procedures are described and discussed. It is argued that cathodic phenomena are dominating for well conditioned electrodes.
