Abstract

Abstract Automatic computer correlation of digital lithostratigraphic measurements can be useful and accurate. It eliminates perception differences of visual correlation by geologists. Unfortunately, the information content in such single-valued data strings as geophysical log curves usually is not sufficient to determine the true correlation. Unless the correlation range is restricted by a priori information, results may be in error. Automatic correlation is difficult and presents many problems for the unwary geologist.
