Abstract

Abstract Phase identification of Gd 5(Si 1.95Ge 2.05), produced using commercial grade Gd and induction melting, showed that various contaminant and second phases were produced along with the desired Gd 5(Si 1.95Ge 2.05) matrix. These phases included Gd 1(Si,Ge) 1, Ta 2Si crystals that are a result of reaction with the crucible, and a Widmanstätten structure of Gd 5(Si,Ge) 3 rods.
