Abstract

In order to prevent science phobia, or the fear of science among children, it is necessary to have children intentionally experience the pleasure of the natural sciences and the enjoyment of discovery, and receptivity to life from a stage of the infancy through observation and experiment with immediate natural phenomena. This article investigated 1the actual situation of the experience of nature provided in kindergarten education, 2the level of environmental awareness among teachers at this level, and 3the leadership claims in this area made by kindergarten childcare providers in Tokyo and Kanagawa. We also clarified problems relating to these points. Finally we proposed improvements for the future of kindergarten education and teachers in this field.
