Settling of a cylindrical particle in a stagnant fluid

The objective of this work is to collect data and develop models for cylindrical particles which could be used in numerical multiphase flow modeling. Trajectories of cylindrical particles settling in stagnant water are filmed from two directions in order to derive detailed information on their motion. In total 66 experiments were carried out with a particle Reynolds number in the range between 2000 and 15000. All experiments show a distinct oscillation around one of the particle minor axes. For all experiments the oscillating velocity is compared to the mean settling velocity, and it is found that the oscillating velocity increases with increasing mean settling velocity. Based on the experiment new expressions for drag and lift coefficient are proposed.
