Abstract

This paper establishes theoretical estimates for the relaxation time to steady state in chemostat cultures. For the simplest case with Monod kinetics two characteristic times τ 1, τ 2 arise. The quantity τ 1 is significant at low dilution rates while τ 2 dominates at dilution rates near washout. The deterioration in the stability characteristics of the chemostat system near washout can be delayed through the use of increased substrate concentrations in the reservoir medium.
