Abstract

Abstract Since the experimental data from small horizontal axis wind rotors are limited, detailed measurements of the aerodynamic characteristics for three different types of blades and two types of rotors were carried out with a conventional force balance in a low speed, open-return wind tunnel. The effects of a low Reynolds number, the angle of attack and the rotor solidity were investigated. The data indicate significant changes in the aerodynamic characteristics due to low Reynolds number viscous effects; these changes are sensitive to the shape of the blades as well as the solidity of the rotor.
