Abstract

• Dynamic changes of biofilm matured under different external loads are investigated. • Most dynamic changes are observed in the first 3 weeks of operation. • External resistance lower than internal resistance improves maturing of the biofilm. • Internal resistance is dependent on external resistance applied in maturing phase. • External resistance irreversibly affects the biofilm properties and performance.
