Do buril flamengo ao brilho do azulejo : a recepção das gravuras ornamentais de Collaert, De Vries, Floris, Cock e van der Borcht em Portugal (1550-1630)

Between the second half of the sixteenth century and during the seventeenth century, the Flemish engravings that circulated in the Iberian Peninsula functioned simultaneously as an inspiring role and a reflection of a new dimension in the processes of creation of ornamental and figurative compendiums applied in panels of azulejos. The impact of Flemish engraving on tile painting reveals the relevant role of Christophe Plantin’s workshops as well as those of Pieter van Craesbeeck for the diffusion of a visual culture in the production of Flemish tile painters such as Jan Floris, Frans Andries and Jan de Goes who respectively settled in Talavera de Reina, Seville and Lisbon around the years 1560‑1565. The adaptation of scenes or engraved models on azulejos highlights the ability of tile painters to transpose some patterns. However, the interpretation of engraved motifs gives the ornament and consequently the azulejo a dimension both stylistic and rhetorical by the association of motifs capable of structuring and modifying the space.
