Abstract
A densely packed iridium ultramicroelectrode array (UMEAs) was developed for determination of trace concentration in water. The newly designed UMEAs was manufactured in silicon technology with four separate working electrode arrays on chip (6.4 mm x 5.5 mm). Each array contains 1012 (46 columns x 22 rows) disc shaped iridium ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) with a diameter of 1.8 #mu#m each and an interelectrode distance of 25 #mu#m. These UMEs showed a superior diffusion behaviour (no shielding effects), greater mass transport rates, and higher signal-to-noise ratios. Therefore the sensitivity of measurements can be greatly improved, compared to macroelectrode based analytical instruments. Using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV), trace, concentration of heavy metal like Pb and Cd in aqueous solution could be successfully determined at parts-per-million level.
