Abstract

This paper presents a mathematical optimization model for designing Reconfigurable Cellular Manufacturing Systems (RCMS). The objective of the problem is to minimize the total cost consisting of resource allocation and reconfiguration, inter-cellular transportation, and processing costs. While minimizing the cost, it is ensured that demand for each part is met in each period, with different units of the same part possibly following different routes and the machines being reconfigurable to meet production requirements. The problem is formulated as an integer programming problem and is solved using Gurobi, a mathematical optimization solver. Computational experiments are conducted to measure the impact of various factors, such as the number of machines and part types and the length of operation sequences, on computational performance. The results show that the model is capable of solving small instances. However, more efficient solution approaches are required for larger instances as the problem size grows exponentially with longer operation sequences.
