Abstract

This work proposes a hybrid permanent magnet material based synchronous machine design, combining the advantages of rare-earth free iron nitride magnets with rare earth magnets. The primary goal of the work is to propose a solution for automotive applications for a passenger car vehicle, capable of reaching the required performance and withstanding active short-circuit events without significant irreversible demagnetization. The study also aims to minimize the content of expensive and climate intensive rare-earth permanent magnet. The proposed design has a reduction of 70% of the rare-earth materials content, without performance degradation. The cost and performance of the proposed design are compared to a benchmark machine with rare earth permanent magnets.
