Abstract

Dental caries is localized as a posteruptive, pathologic process of external origin involving the destruction of hard tooth tissue, whicb if continued, results in the formation of cavity. From approximately 3000 BC to the mid 1770’s, it was believed tbat a worm that lived in the center of the tooth was responsible for toothaches. With a few recent exceptions, dental caries is to be considered a multifactorial chronic disease accompanying advances in civilization. Throughout the History there has been significant change of the caries experience. Several authors studied its evolution and development. The purpose of this brief is to describe historical sketches of advances in cariology.
