It portrays North Carolina at a situation date of 1891 showing the Western North Carolina Railroad as being completed to Murphy. Counties are delineated and named, cities and towns are shown. Major rivers and other bodies of water are also shown. Relief is indicated by hachures. Railroads named include the Atlanta, Tennessee & Ohio Rail Road; Atlantic & North Carolina Rail Road; Augusta & Charlotte Rail Road; Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Rail Road; Carolina Central Rail Road; Durham & Northern Rail Road; Jamesville & Washington Rail Road; North Carolina Rail Road; Raleigh & Augusta Air Line Rail Road; Raleigh & Gaston Rail Road; Western North Carolina Rail Road; Wilmington, Columbia & Augusta Rail Road; Wilmington & Weldon Rail Road; and Wilson & Fayetteville Rail Road.
