Magnetic interaction and MNM transition in fluid cesium

Abstract

Abstract Experimental results of the magnetic susceptibility of fluid cesium are reported for both the metallic liquid and the nonmetallic dense vapour phase. On the metallic side of the MNM transition a strong increase of the susceptibility is observed, reaching a maximum when the dc-conductivity is around 10 3Ω −1 cm −1 . This spin susceptibility enhancement indicates, that electron correlation is a determining factor for the NNM transition in expanded fluid alkalis. In the nonmetallic dense vapour phase the data give direct evidence for the existence of a high amount of diamagnetic molecular associations, like Cs 2 molecules.
