Superannuation investment in infrastructure

The increase in the current account deficit has led to calls for increased spending on public infrastructure. As at the end of September 2004 total superannuation fund assets were about $648.9 billion, making superannuation assets easily the largest group of funds available for investment. In this research note Leslie Nielson looks at what is meant by 'infrastructure', examines the general guidelines that trustees must follow when making investment decisions and assesses the advantages and disadvantages of superannuation funds investing in infrastructure.
