Abstract

Abstract The quasi-particle transport of normal metal/insulator/charge density wave (N/I/C) junctions with density modulation normal to the interface is investigated theoretically. In contrast to superconductors or ferromagnets, the tunnel current depends strongly on the macroscopic phase of the charge density wave condensate and does not approach the bulk density of states for strong barrier potentials. Characteristic sample-to-sample conductance fluctuations due to random phases in mesoscopic systems and quantum size effects in the tunneling spectra of a thin charge density wave film are predicted.
