Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter introduces the book on aminomethylenemalonates and their use in heterocyclic synthesis. The chapter surveys the chemistry and the use in heterocyclic synthesis of aminomethylenemalonates and their cyclic esters, where R1 and R2 or R2 and R3 may likewise form a ring. Some early reviews in this field merely touched on certain aspects of the chemistry of aminomethylenemalonates and did not treat the subject systematically. Among the aminomethylenemalonates, the N-aryl and N-hetaryl derivatives and their cyclization products are of great importance in organic chemistry as some of them are key intermediates in the synthesis of different 4-aminoquinoline antimalarials in the preparation of anticoccidial 6,7-dialkoxy-4-hydroxyquinoline-3-carboxylate and in the production of antibacterial agents of the nalidixic acid type.
