Abstract

Abstract The newly emerging domain of service robots encompasses a wide spectrum of advanced technologies and holds the potential for surpassing industrial robots in both scope and diversity. Service robots incorporate a wide spectrum of sectors including health and human services, education, space, undersea, security, hazardous environments, and other nonmanufacturing sectors. This paper will provide a historical review of this incipient application area for robotic technology and discuss key issues related to the research, development, evaluation, and diffusion of this class of robotic and artificial intelligence technologies. Specific examples of current research endeavors in the health and human services domain will be discussed.
