Abstract

Abstract This summarizes recent theoretical and experimental studies of the compounds whose skeletons are made of the heavier Group 14 elements. Included are the heavier analogues of benzene and strained polycyclic alkanes of current interest. Several interesting and novel properties of silicon, germanium, tin and lead skeletons are demonstrated by means of ab initio molecular orbital calculations. To characterize the properties, the applicability of the concepts such as aromaticity, strain and bonding established in carbon chemistry is discussed.
