Inhibition of colicin B by enterochelin

Abstract

An inhibitor of colicin B excreted into the culture media by E. coli strains, and hyperproduced by exb mutants, is shown to be the iron chelator enterochelin (= enterobactin). Production of the inhibitor by E. coli exb + is regulated by the concentration of iron in the medium. The exb mutants fall into two classes: exbA, also having the properties of tonB mutants, and exbB which have a partial requirement for methionine.
