Abstract

Abstract The population of Utah consists of 71.5 per cent Mormons, whose church discourages the use of tobacco and alcohol. The effect of this admonition has resulted in a cigarette consumption per capita that is 52 per cent of the United States average and a 43 per cent reduction in the incidence of cancer of the tongue, mouth, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx. A study of the smoking habits of patients with cancer of the head and neck at the Latter-day Saints Hospital showed that the majority of patients with these lesions were smokers.
