The CCGM theory applied to the specular intensity near a bound-state resonance in atom-surface diffractive scattering

Abstract

Abstract Recently, certain rules for the appearance of a maximum, a minimum, or a mixed maximum-minimum in the specular intensity at a bound-state resonance in a diffractive atom-surface elastic-scattering system were derived theoretically by Wolfe and Weare. The earlier theory of Cabrera, Celli, Goodman and Manson, known as CCGM, is generally believed to predict only a specular maximum in such a system. It is shown that the CCGM theory of elastic scattering predicts any one of the three different types of behaviour, according to the particular system, just as do the more recent treatments, and the rules in question are shown to be special cases of the results of CCGM.
