Abstract

Abstract The lattice stability of YBa 2Cu 3O x is studied using a rigid ion model. The semiconducting compound, YBa 2Cu 3O 6, is stable, while superconducting YBa 2Cu 3O 7 is unstable. The vibrational eigenstates of the phonon modes which destabilize YBa 2Cu 3O 7 have properties which may greatly enhance the electron-phonon coupling.
