Abstract

Abstract Backward N ∗ production in the reaction pd → d′ N ∗ has been investigated in the energy range 1.0 to 5.0 GeV as a direct experimental means for testing the dynamic role of N ∗ exchanges, found earlier to provide a unified description for the pd → dp and pp → d π + processes over a wide range of energies. Our results indicate distinct peaks corresponding to the resonances P 111470), P' 11 (1750), D 13(1520) and F 15(1688), which had indeed been found to provide the major contributions among N ∗ exchanges in pd → dp and pp → d π + These results provide quantitative support to the possibility for experimental detection of these peaks in a backward pd → d′ N ∗ reaction, which is free from the high background of P 33 like isobaric effects.
