Abstract

Abstract The time evolution of SANS functions of physical gelation of syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) dispersed in chloroform was investigated by time-resolved SANS. The total scattering intensity Q increased with time in parallel with ordering of the TTGG-type skeletal conformation as revealed by time-resolved FT-IR. At early stages of gelation, the SANS functions were reproduced well by the theoretical equation derived for semidilute star polymers, and then converted to the form characteristic of continuous fractal objects. The structural parameters describing gel-network structures were evaluated as a function of gelation time and analyzed in connection with the sol—gel transformation mechanism.
